
Making Art Comics with Tommi Parrish

Join award-winning cartoonist, Tommi Parrish, for a week of creative comics making October 16 to 20.
The class will be a combination of book making, playing with different DIY printing techniques, and painting with gouache based on writing exercises. Each part will draw on Tommi’s own creative practice.
Come prepared for an atmosphere of looseness and play that can you take forward into your practice at home.
Daily Schedule
Starting Monday October 16 to Friday October 20, class will meet 10AM-1PM, break for lunch and return for the afternoon session 2PM-5PM.
Where
This is an in person only event in Gainesville, Florida at our new location: 1314 S Main St.
Who
You are an adult (18+) who is curious, willing to experiment and has energy to work independently.
Class size is limited to 15 people.
About the Instructor
Tommi Parrish (b. 1989, Melbourne) is a trans-Australian cartoonist and painter living in Western Massachusetts. Their debut work, The Lie and How We Told It, won the 2019 Lambda Literary Award for the best LGBTQ graphic novel, was nominated for the Ignatz award, and was featured in many Best of 2018 lists.
Tommi’s sophomore graphic novel released by Fantagraphics in 2022, Men I Trust has so far been nominated to the LA times books awards. Parrish’s comics have been translated into 11 languages worldwide and and their work has been showcased in The New Yorker, Granta Magazine, The New York Times, Pitchfork, Vice, and many more.

This course is priced on a sliding scale $350 to $850.
Recommended price: $480

Cost of admission does not include cost of transport and accommodation, which is the responsibility of participants.

Supplies
Please feel welcome to bring your preferred supplies but all required materials for the workshop will be supplied by SAW PLUS access to the library, work space, printers, printer paper, and other basic art supplies.

COVID Policy
We continue to encourage all members of our community to be vaccinated. While masks are not required in the space, we ask all participants to respect other peoples choices and requests. Ongoing precautions include increased cleaning and reduced class sizes.
If anyone feels symptoms they are asked to notify us and stay at home until they’ve received a negative test. We’re a small group who are good friends, lets stay safe and protect each other.
This course is subject to cancellation depending on enrolment and COVID safety.
